Nous: The Breed’s Founding Legend

Every great breed has its founding legend. For the Golden Retriever, that legend begins with Nous, a yellow wavy-coated retriever born in 1864. His breeding to Belle, a Tweed Water Spaniel, is traditionally regarded as the beginning of the Tweedmouth line, from which the modern Golden Retriever emerged. More than a century and a half later, Nous remains one of the most iconic dogs in the breed’s history.
