The Science Behind Our Breeding Program
When most people evaluate a dog, they see beauty, structure, movement, temperament, and overall health. These qualities are incredibly important, but they tell only part of the story.
Modern veterinary genetics has transformed responsible breeding by giving us the ability to look beyond what we can observe. While a dog’s outward appearance reflects its phenotype, that phenotype is influenced not only by genetics, but also by nutrition, environment, early development, and other biological factors. Looking at a dog alone does not always reveal what it may pass on to future generations.
DNA testing allows breeders to identify known disease causing genetic variants and better understand the genetic foundation of their dogs.
Our foundation female, Lilikoi (Rise Above of Clear Passion) has undergone comprehensive genetic health testing, including genetic diversity screening, the newly available HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) genetic screening through North Carolina State University, and additional genetic testing through the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory and Embark. We are proud to announce she is clear for all disease causing genetic variants found in Golden Retrievers included in these screenings.
As science continues to evolve, so will our breeding program. We are committed to using the best available research and genetic technology to help preserve the health, longevity, and future of the Golden Retriever.
